On a sad note, the club was shocked on learning of the untimely loss of Past President Hans Schult on 19 January 1998, however the club received some consolation in the fact that we were the lead
organisers for his Memorial Service and other arrangements. This was not our first loss of a club member, however it was our first loss of a much-loved and highly respected Past President, who
contributed so much to us all during his membership, but particularly during his Presidency.

The club membership at 30 June 1998 stood at 53, a decrease of 1 member (1.85%) over the previous year.

This year was one of great financial success for our "Forever Young" club, under the leadership of President Raju Daswani, the 4th Indian member of KGM to become President.
The club continued to actively participate in Community Service work through donations to local charities, whereby our total outlay amounted to over HK$900,000 which was a new record. Beneficiaries
included the Sathya Sai Baba Centre, the Haven Of Hope Hospital, the St. James Settlement, the Society for Welfare of Autistic Persons and numerous smaller charities, often supported simultaneously by
"hands-on" contributions made by our Interact and Rotaract Clubs. During the year the club's second Interact Club of Ying Wa Girl's School was chartered.
On a District level, the club was the primary host club for the Annual District Assembly under the very capable Chairmanship of PP C.K. Tsang. The event was a tremendous success, both in attendance
and financial terms. On the International front, we were honoured by a visit to our District by incumbent RI President James Lacy, the club participated in a matching grant with the Rotary Club of
Colombo and a total of 5 new Paul Harris Fellows were recruited. The club was also successful in it's nomination of Mr. Yusuf Leung as a member of the next Group Study Exchange Team from our District.
Although the club enjoyed a successful year in terms of membership growth, our average attendance dropped for the first time below the mandated 60%, and this was largely due to economic pressures as a
result of the "Asian Financial Crisis". However the club embarked upon various measures to reverse this trend, but the results of our efforts will not be known until the end of the next
Rotary year. Numerous fellowship events were held throughout the year, with the highlight being the very successful "President's Night" at the KCC, generously sponsored by President Raju and
First Lady Shalini, a tradition which has been observed by most Presidents of the club.
The club membership at 30 June 1999 stood at 54, an increase of 1 member (1.89%) over the previous year.

Rotary Year 1999/2000:

President-Elect: Cassidy Lam, Vice-Presidents: Ebe Tung & Alex Lau , Secretary: Nanu Lachman, Treasurer: Silva Yeung, Community Service: Alex Lau, Vocational

President M.V. "Ram" Ramadasan was keen to observe the RI theme of "Act with Consistency, Credibility and Continuity" during his term of office, largely because he was determined
to provide maximum support to incumbent District Governor Dipo C. Sani, the first member of KGM to be elected to the highest office in the District.
During DG Dipo's term of office, the Rotary Club of Mongolia became a member of District 3450, thereby making our District "tri-territorial" again (previously, some clubs in Taiwan were part
of our District which, at that time, was numbered 345).
Our support of the Governor included prominent participation in all major District events, including the District Assembly, the District Conference and the District Installation Ceremony.
Additionally, KGM recorded the highest club attendance at the first RI Presidential Conference ever to be held in Hong Kong.
In recognition of our efforts, the club garnered six District awards, including the inaugural award for "Best Club Web Site" in District 3450.
As far as membership was concerned, President Ram inherited 54 members from his predecessor, and he managed to induct a total of 9 new members during the year, a remarkable achievement.
Unfortunately this fantastic growth was dampened by the loss of 8 members, due primarily to immigration. However the nett gain of 1 member, making a year-end total of 55 members, was nonetheless
acceptable growth, which even managed to make KGM the 5th largest club in District 3450. While the average overall attendance for the year was somewhat disappointing at 64%, there were signs that
efforts to address this problem were being successful, as the final few months of the year recorded attendance in excess of 70%. The membership classification list was reviewed and revised during the
year, and 3 members were elevated to Senior Active status.
On the International Service front, the club contributed US$5,000 to our sister club, the Rotary Club of Paranaque in the Philippines, in an effort to provide additional support for their ongoing
"Cleft Lip and Palate Program". The club also contributed a further US$5,000 towards a matching grant we embarked upon with the Rotary Club of Delhi Midwest, India, in order to provide
post-natal care equipment to the Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama Hospital in Hardwar, India near the Himalayas. The Rotary Foundation was also not forgotten during the year, as the club enlisted 12
additional Paul Harris fellows plus 1 Benefactor, another tremendous achievement, given that the District goal was to secure 50 new contributors.

Members enjoyed 9 fellowship events during the year, with themes including Italian, Chinese, Indian, Mexican and Spanish nights, however the busiest evening was undoubtedly the annual Oktoberfest at
the Holiday Inn Golden Mile, where the club had over 90 attendees.
Other fellowships included the club's most financially successful Annual Ball at the Grand Hyatt Hotel and the "walk-a-thon" from Tai Tam Tuk Village, both of which also served as
fund-raising events, raising over HK$139,000 and HK$112,000 respectively for the club's community service fund.
Beneficiaries of our Community Service work included the St. James Settlement, the HK Society for the Deaf, the Sowers Action Group and the Lok Chi Association, and our total community service
contributions during the year amounted to over HK$400,000.
Vocational Service was also not forgotten, as the club recognised and awarded two prominent persons for their tireless dedication to the community. The first was Sister Maureen McGinley for her work
in AIDS CARE in Hong Kong and the second was Principal W.M. Chiu, from the St. James Settlement, for his 40 years of love and care for the needs of the mentally and physically handicapped in Hong
Kong. The club was also a major sponsor of the "Model taxi drivers award from the view point of people with disabilities" project, and the club was recognised by the Commissioner for
Transport for our efforts. Additionally, the club made vocational visits to Hong Kong International Airport, and 4 club members gave career development talks to youth, while continually providing
general support to our Rotaract Club and two Interact Clubs.
Finally KGM was the first club in District 3450 to distribute a weekly bulletin exclusively by e-mail to all members.
The club membership at 30 June 2000 stood at 55, an increase of 1 member (1.85%) over the previous year.
(PP M.V. Ramadasan remains an Active member of KGM.)

President Cassidy used the new Rotary theme to encourage members to "Create Awareness" about their health and to "Take Action" to improve it. One way he achieved his goal was to
focus on guest speakers during the year with a medical or health background.
Additionally, as a service to the disabled and the elderly in the community, the club embarked on it's first "Free Health Check-Up Service", in cooperation with volunteers from St. Paul's
Hospital and the Wai Ji Christian Workshop. This event was supported by 50 Rotarians and their partners, and a total of 600 clients benefited from the club's efforts.
As far as Fellowship was concerned, members enjoyed a variety of events during the year, including our traditional Chinese, Indian and "NINC" nights, a walk followed by a seafood lunch on
Lamma Island, a horse racing evening, and a wet an wild "Impeachment Night", graciously hosted by the President, who was attacked by a bevy of beauties and unceremoniously thrown into the
swimming pool of the Kowloon Cricket Club while fully dressed! However as President Cassidy took honours at the District Swimming Gala earlier in the year, we were not concerned for his well-being.
Of course the fellowship highlight of the year was, as usual, the club's Annual Ball, which included a dragon dance and a kung-fu demonstration, in honour of having a Chinese club president.
On the International Service front, President Cassidy lead a small delegation to the Philippines and the club also endorsed a candidate from Beijing, Ms. Janet Liu, who was accepted as a student under
the Georgia Rotary Scholarship Program, in the USA. The club was also quick to act, and to contribute funds, to the survivors of the devastating earthquake in Gujarat, India.
In respect of Vocational Service, members visited the kitchen of a major hotel and paid a courtesy visit on newly arrived families from China. Of course our club did not forget Community Service, and
a number of members visited the Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile school in Yeung Sai Yuen, China, which was established some years ago.
All-in-all, it was an active and highly successful year for the club.
The club membership at 30 June 2001 stood at 56, an increase of 1 member (1.82%) over the previous year.
