Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002

This Week's Meeting:

Our speaker this week is Mrs. Vanessa So, from the ICAC, and the topic of the presentation is "Ethical Management in Business".

Mrs Vanessa So is the Regional Officer of the Regional Office (Kowloon West), Community Relations Department of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Her post requires her to represent the Commission in West Kowloon in developing strategies to enlist public support to the work of ICAC and to promote an anti-corruption culture in the region.

Mrs So joined the ICAC in late 1970s, and was promoted to her present rank in 1994.  Throughout the years in the ICAC, Mrs So has accumulated wide experience in public administration and community relations.  She has been the Programme Coordinator for the area of Youth, and is now the Programme Coordinator of the Public Sector.  She is also a member of the Insurance Industry Taskforce on corruption prevention.

1) LAST CALL: The District Rotary Foundation Seminar
will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday 7 September 2002 at the New World Renaissance Hotel, Tsimshatsui.

Our old mate KGM Rotary Foundation Director PP "Butch" Cassidy Lam is still looking for victims, er, volunteers to accompany him. Visit the District website for more information.

Please contact PP Cassidy by email or by telephone 9031 2883, if you are able to attend.

+++++

2) District Visit to China: The delegation plans to depart for Beijing on Sunday 8 September then onto Shanghai on Wednesday 11 September, and they will return to Hong Kong on Friday 13 September. The delegation will visit a variety of official government ministries as well as the provisional Rotary Clubs in Beijing and Shanghai.

KGM members wishing to join all or part of the schedule should contact Peter Wan by email.

+++++

3) The District Swimming Gala will be held on Sunday 29 September 2002 at the Ma On Shan Swimming Pool.

The truly exciting news is that, under the capable guidance of former Fearless Leader PP Cassidy "Flipper" Lam, KGM is the host club for the event.

If you recall, at last year's event PP Cassidy won two prestigious honours for KGM, namely the "Briefest Speedo Trunks Filled To Capacity" award and the much coveted "My What Huge Pecs You Have" award.

However since KGM are the organisers of the event this year, we're going to ensure there are more awards available for categories where KGM will excel. These include a "Biggest Belly Flop With A Half Twist Of Lemon" award, the "Hairiest Nipples" award and the "Beached Whale Impersonation" award.

If you are willing and able to assist Cassidy, please contact him by email or by telephone 9031 2883.

the official website for more information.

Who Am I?:

What is the more common name of West Indian born, British singer Leslie Sebastian Charles?

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Dear Geek:

Where do they store the Internet? Yours Rick O'Shea.

Dear Rick, The pages most people view on their computer screens are part of the World Wide Web ("WWW"), which is merely a portion of what is generically called "The Internet".

There is no central storage place for the WWW. The individual websites and pages which form the WWW are stored on thousands of different computers around the world. These computers are called "servers", because they "serve" information to those who request it (and who have authority to view it). They are all linked together by the Internet.

For example, the pages which make up the KGM website are stored on a server situated at Pacific Net, Hong Kong, who act as our Internet Service Provider ("ISP"), and they "host" our website for a fee. However we could always store our website on our own server, which could be situated in our Web Monster's or another member's office, but for reasons I won't go into here, this is not as convenient.

When you "access the Internet", you either use a dial-up or broadband connection, just like you pick up your telephone to make a voice call. The only difference is that your telephone handset connects to the telephone system for voice calls but your dial-up or broadband service connects to the Internet.

When you make a telephone call, you dial a number, but in places like North America, numbers are often represented by easier to remember words. For example, a pizza parlour with a number such as 1 800 4387 4992 might advertise themselves as 1 800 GET PIZZA.

When you connect to the Internet to go to the KGM website, you also "dial a number" which is http://202.64.39.11, but this is represented by an easier to remember www.rckgm.org.

Try clicking on the "number" version of the KGM website address and see what happens. You will still get the same KGM website, however instead of seeing "rckgm.org" in your address bar, you will see the number.

Yours, The Geek.

Golden Smile:

It was the first day of school and the teacher thought she'd get to know the kids by asking them their names and to ask them what their fathers did for a living.

The first child said, "My name is Mary and my daddy is a postman."

The second child said, "My name is Andy and my daddy is a mechanic."

It was then little Johnny's turn and he said, "My name is Johnny and my daddy is a striptease dancer in a cabaret for gay men."

The teacher gasped and quickly moved on, but later, in the schoolyard, the teacher approached Johnny privately and asked if it was really true that his dad dances in a gay bar.

Little Johnny blushed and said: "Nah, he's actually an auditor for Arthur Andersen, but I was too embarrassed to say so."
