Postcard from
Manila:
Yes folks, I'm at it once again. No, I don't mean that ...... I
mean shooting in the Philippines! Well it was a choice of either
spending a long weekend in Hong Kong avoiding mooncakes and watching a
bunch of DVD's or brutally assassinating pieces of cardboard. Anyway, as I
missed last week's meeting, this rather brief report is based upon
information given to me by my British spy, codename "Monty Python".Apparently our Fearless Leader President Ebe Tung "Chee Wow" opened the meeting on time (for a change!), and she began by introducing our special guest, Assistant Governor Amy Ho. President Ebe then performed an important task by formally inducting new member Tim Wong to the KGM ranks. Of course, keeping true to form, President Ebe didn't close the meeting until Thursday. Sadly there is nothing in my report about the antics of
Sergeant Susie "Madam Lash"
Misini but, judging by past experiences, I presume she
fined everybody who had a pulse.
Next, Program Director Carola "Cha-Cha" Chard gave a "War & Peace" length introduction of PP Sir Joseph "Klu Klux" Kwan, who proceeded to give an excellent and visually informative presentation on his work with Rehabaid in respect of providing improved building access for the disabled in Hong Kong. The vote of thanks was given by PP Robin "Da Hood" Ching whose company, Hang Lung Development, has had first-hand experience dealing with Sir Joseph in a professional capacity. I understand that the Hang Lung Board affectionately refers to Sir Joseph as "Ma #%$@ Faan"! This Week's Meeting:
This week's speaker is Mr. Greg Pote who will be speaking to us on "The Smartcard Revolution". Milestones:
Birthday congratulations to the following KGM members: 1 October: PP Robin "Bada Bing" Ching who shares his birthday with former US President Jimmy Carter. 2 October: KGM Membership Director Diana "The Red Baron" Chou, who shares her birthday with Groucho Marx. 7 October: KGM Vice-President Elissa "Can-Can" Cohen, who shares her birthday with two famous celebrities, namely cellist Yo-Yo Ma and South African cleric Bishop Desmond Tutu. By the way, can you imagine what would happen if those guys married? One of them would be called "Yo-Yo Tutu" ! Member Updates:
Welcome to our newest member, Rtn. Tim Wong, who was inducted on 26 September 2001. If you have not already done so, kindly introduce yourself to Tim at the earliest opportunity and make him feel welcome (e.g. buy him a beer and share the peanuts). Fellowship News: Yes folks, it's that time of the year again when we embark upon
our annual Oktoberfest
fellowship. This is when KGM members shamelessly
drink copious amounts of beer, eat enormous sausages and do the chicken
dance, while wearing lederhosen and silly hats. In other words, you get to
act as though you are at a KGM Board meeting! The Oktoberfest Fellowship will be held on Saturday 29 October 2001 at the Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel (not at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile, as in previous years). The cost is only $300 per head, and this includes two pints of beer served in a souvenir beer stein, a main course, dessert and lots of schnapps. Cheap! Members interested in attending should contact Herr Biermeister David "Oom Pa Pa" Harilela on telephone 9168 8333 or, better still, send him an email which will be efficiently handled by his Secretary "Amazing Grace", who is more organised and much better looking. District 3450 News: 1) The District 10 Pin Bowling Tournament
will be held at the Mei Foo Sun Chuen Fun Bowl on Sunday 28 October 2001. Any KGM members

2) A District Vocational

Peninsula from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday 30 October 2001 at the Hong Kong
Hotel, Tsimshatsui. There is no charge for the seminar; attendees only
need to pay for their lunch.
KGM members interested in attending this seminar should contact KGM Vocational Service Director PP Louis "Trailwalker" Thomas (who needs KGM members to accompany him and buy him beer). Call PP Louis on telephone 9171 3769 or send him an email. District 3450
Special Request:
As many KGM members already
know, the Rotary Club of
Ulaanbaatar, currently the only Rotary Club in Mongolia,
is part of our District 3450, which also encompasses all Rotary Clubs
in Hong Kong and Macau.
We have been advised by District 3450 that a small delegation from RC Ulaanbaatar are planning to attend our 42nd District Conference, which will be held at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel on 16 &17 March 2002. In an effort to reduce their expenses, our colleagues from Mongolia are seeking "home stay" accommodation for one or more male or female members for the duration of their brief visit to Hong Kong. KGM members who are willing and able to assist in this matter are asked to contact District 3450 Membership Development Coordinator PP Herbert Lau of RC Tolo Harbour by email. Who Am I? What is the more common name of world famous South American
soccer player Edson Arantes Do
Nascimento?
The answer appears at the bottom of this issue. Cunning
Linguist:
Have you ever wondered about the origins of the word "Boycott"? This is an excellent example of an "eponym", a
word based on a proper name, like Wellington boots, garibaldi biscuits or
the mackintosh.
Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott was an Englishman working in Ireland. In the 1870s he was farming at Loughmask in County Mayo and serving as a land agent for an absentee English landlord, Lord Earne. This was the time of the campaign organised by the Irish Land League for reform of the system of landholdings. In September 1880, protesting tenants demanded that Captain Boycott give them a substantial reduction in their rents, but he refused. Charles Stuart Parnell, the President of the Land League, suggested in a speech that the way to force Boycott to give way was for everyone in the locality to refuse to have any dealings with him. Labourers would not work for him, local shops stopped serving him (food had to be brought in from elsewhere for him and his family), and he even had great trouble getting his letters delivered. In the end, his crops were harvested that autumn through the help of fifty volunteers from the north of the country, who worked under the protection of nine hundred soldiers. The events aroused so much passion that his name became an instant byword. It was first used - in our modern sense of collective and organised ostracism - in the Times of London in November 1880, even while his crops were still being belatedly harvested; within weeks it was everywhere. It was soon adopted by newspapers throughout Europe, with versions of his name appearing in French, German, Dutch and Russian. By the time of the Captain's death in 1897, it had become a standard part of the English language.

If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills, If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it, If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time, If you can overlook when people take things out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong, If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can face the world without lies and deceit, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If you can relax without liquor, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, Then you are probably a cat or a dog. grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. Today she's
97, and we don't have a clue where the hell she is". -- Ellen DeGeneres
